The Roots Blower is a Positive Displacement machine. This means it delivers a nearly constant volume of air or gas with each revolution, regardless of the discharge pressure (within its operating limits).

The working principle is straightforward:

  • Intake Phase: As the two synchronized rotors rotate in opposite directions inside the housing, they create a vacuum at the inlet port. This action draws in a measured volume of air or gas.
  • Trapping Phase: The air/gas is trapped in the pockets formed between the rotors and the inner walls of the casing.
  • Transfer Phase: The rotors carry the trapped air/gas from the inlet side to the discharge side along the casing walls.
  • Discharge/Compression Phase: When the pocket opens to the discharge port, the higher-pressure gas from the outlet flows back into the pocket. It instantaneously compresses the newly transferred gas. This process, known as external compression, raises the pressure before the air/gas is discharged into the outlet pipe.

The continuous rotation of the lobes ensures a steady, non-pulsating flow of air/gas for industrial use.
